Android 2.2 Release Date 2010

So now that the introduction of Android 2.2 or Froyo has come and gone, it’s only right that plenty of you out there are wondering when it might start showing up on phones. Fortunately for all of you out there, Google I/O has cleared up any and all confusion with a very simple tweet only a short time ago.

Obviously, they too were bombarded with questions about a public release. Of course, the Froyo SDK is already out for developers to mess around with, so if you’re not a developer listen up:

Froyo will be made available to OEMs and the open source community in the coming weeks.

There you have it, San Francisco. Android 2.2 will start emerging sometime in the sort of distant future, I’d imagine sometime after the release of the HTC EVO 4G on June 4th. So for now, you are left with all of the tantalizing features that the software is going to be bringing to Android handsets.

The fact that it’s touted to be 5x faster than Éclair aka Android 2.1 is mind boggling and the fact that it supports tethering, hot spot creation, Flash 10.1, and apparently has the world’s fastest mobile browser make it the most delicious mobile OS offering to date in my opinion.

iPhone OS 4 will definitely give it a run for its money though.

For now, phones running Android 2.1 and below can be found locally in San Francisco at just about any store that carrier phones.
